With the majority of our members departing the state for the warmer climes of Northern Australia, those members remaining were left to endure the cool effects of winter. No problems, for we were to gather on the temperate East Coast at the Chain of Lagoon's (Lagoon Beach)for our annual Camp Oven Damper and Gum Boot throwing competition.
Mick dragging in logs Members beach fishing
A few of us arrived earlier in the week and set up our yellow canopy "Bee Haven" and gathered wood for our fire's. Mick decided that big fires were to be the norm for the weekend and in no time had located large logs which he dragged into the fire. In total, eight large logs were dragged by his small four wheel drive and burnt plus four ute loads of wood. Surf fishing was good with quite a few caught, though overcast the weather was warm and really for this time of the year it could be said it was quite "balmy".
Starting the fire
Mick's happy hour
Our evening fire

On the thursday the early arrivals were treated to nice hot scones, cooked in the camp oven, with pure King Island butter plus raspberry jam with lashings of cream, most sumptuous.
Friday arrived and last of our members were to arrive at varying times during the day, they were met by our hosts Mick and Kaye who parked us up and steered us towards the boiling billy on the fire. The earlier arrivals were to cook their breakfast on the fire before going walkabout to inspect the campsite and the beach. Again out came the surf rods and the quest was on again to catch fish for lunch. Patrick was to catch a salmon which he cooked for lunch and Liz was to catch a fair sized crab; which ended up in the pot.
What a nice sunny day with plenty of power coming from the solar panels and members just sitting around enjoying the day or off walking to see the sights on the beach and around the camp site.
Happy hour arrived and our President Graeme was to welcome all members and those that had arrived from Queensland. Paul and Scott were to arrive in a hire and drive van and were looking forward to the weekend having enjoyed the weekend this time last year. Scott has been chosen again to assist in the judging of the Damper cooking competition tomorrow.
As we all came together it was great to chew the fat and compare our travels in the state in the last month, it is obvious that people are choosing to list the East Coast in their itinerary thus dodging frosts and fogs that other areas of the state are currently experiencing.
Many were to cook their evening meal on both the fire and the barbecue and then sit by the enormous fire to consume the meal whilst enjoying the company of other members.
Even though the evening was getting a little cool we still all gathered by the fire where Julie was to tell us many fine jokes which bought much laughter, come to think of it there was much laughter without the joke telling, which was a sign that we were all enjoying the evening by the fire.

Enjoying the afternoon sun
Gathered around the fire after our evening meal
Saturday morning dawned which saw the fishermen off to try their luck in the early morning light, many were to arise late and cooked their breakfast by the fire making use of the boiling kettle also. Then it was off to a committee meeting and then the member's quarterly meeting and then straight into the Damper Cooking Competition at 11am.

Scott presents Damper perpetual shield to winners Ross and Lynn
There were many different types of Dampers of all shapes and sizes with the competition on with a vengeance, good hot coals produced many beautiful dampers. Scott and Gwen were the judges with the entry from Ross and Lynn judged the best damper with Mick and Kaye being awarded the highly commended damper award. Then with mugs of hot soup we were to tuck in, so to speak, tasting all the Dampers for our lunch. It would be true to say we pigged out in no uncertain terms. There was more than enough damper to feed all.
Patrick throwing gum boot Grouped around for throw off.

The gumboot throwing competition was full of laughter with the wonderful way the gumboot was thrown by either the men or woman. Up the trees or sideways it did not matter for it bought plenty of jibes and laughter. The eventual winner in the men's was Mick and the woman's Vi from the Blue Gum Rovers. Paul was to win the under 40 section with much applause, come to think of it there are many of us who are not even close to that age. Before we knew it happy hour arrived and our hosts announced that a sausage sizzle was available to all members and guests for our evening meal. Our visitors Paul and Scott prepared two sumptuous platters which they passed around, the variety and selection of cheeses was wonderful and enjoyed by all.
As the daylight hours drew to a close the fire was stoked with another two large logs to fend off the chilly night air, there is no doubting the skill level of Mick in the bush along with his trusty Jimney Suzuki.
Herb and Jim cooked the sausages whilst other members made use of their camp ovens to cook vegetable's etc, in no time at all we were all fed and sitting by the fire enjoying both our meal and the company of those at the rally. We had four Blue Gum Rovers, Ken & Vi and Ray & Dulcie, drop in and they decided to join us for the rest of the Rally.
After our meal we gathered under the canopy and enjoyed a video of the travels of Paul and Scott around Tasmania with their eventual arrival at our Lagoon Beach Rally last year. Most enlightening and a thrill to watch, some commented that even though they had been to the same spots; the video had shown a whole new perspective. Then by the fire with some wandering off to watch football and others having an extended happy hour, some more happier than others.

Irene serving out the meal
Enjoying the wonderful casserole
Sunday morning was cool though very sunny and some members were slow to arise with our avid fishermen off to try their luck once again. Unfortunately they were only to catch very small cocky salmon which they returned to the water, it was wonderful down on the beach today with little wind and just a small surf running. Patrick was in the throes of re-baiting and had taken the bait bag out of the bucket and when he turned to again pick it up he noticed it was gone. Then he noted that a seagull was in full flight carrying his bait bag well up the beach before tucking into its contents, this bought forth both comiserations and laughter.
There were many who had to leave and head off to work and that left just a small group of us. Irene had offered to cook lunch for us in her dream pot; the main ingredient being sausages that were surplus to our requirements last night. Mick was to cook two dampers and we were to enjoy a most enjoyable casserole dipped in damper for sunday lunch. What a treat! There is no doubt about the camaraderie at our rally's and the way it bonds us into one big happy family.
Then with reluctance, it was time to dismantle "Bee Haven" and pack away our gear in the trailer. The afternoon saw many others depart just leaving a few who intend to stay on a few more days.
There is no doubt that both Mick and Kaye are excellent rally hosts who again gave us all another delightful and full programme over this weekend. not to  mention the great fires which some estimate all up we burnt 6 tonne of wood before, during and after the Rally days. We will gather at our next rally next month at Grants Lagoon on the East Coast of Tasmania and again we can look forward to large fires. Check Rally updates in the Notice Board page for more information.
