Each month, there is much thought given by hosts as to the location and the type of entertainment that may be suitable for that particular Rally. Our Grant's Lagoon Rally was no different, it came as no surprise that set in the pristine Bay of Fires near Binalong Bay, on the East Coast of Tasmania, that this Rally would have a fishing and seafood theme.
Albatross gathered seeking to eat Flathead & other fish
The "Gulch" Binalong Bay looking towards Grants Lagoon
Saturday evening has a Flathead fish cook up planned, bearing this in mind there was need to catch the fish as close to the Rally time as possible to ensure their freshness. It was calculated that we would need to catch at least 90 fish to feed those attending the Rally.
So out in Jim's boat and over went the lines and in no time we were catching fish watched by the beautiful sea bird the "Albatross". To watch these birds with a seven foot wingspan come in to land on the water close to the boat was a sight to behold. Though it was a race to get the fish inboard or face losing them to the birds. We were to snag two Albatross in our lines and the only way to release them was to cut our lines, we did this without hesitation not wanting to injure these magnificent birds.
Early morning camp Rain soaked campfire wood
Grants Lagoon Members chasing elusive Bream

With the majority of the members and Motorhomes arriving on the Wednesday setting up our camp was made much easier, then out and collect the wood for our fires and then it was time to commence one of many happy hours over the coming days.
Thursday arrived and a few went out on Jim's boat to do a bit of fishing, having caught ten fish they were cleaned and we enjoyed them for lunch. Unfortunately we were to experience showers during the afternoon, though it wasn't a problem for we just placed more wood on the fire.
We all came together for another unofficial happy hour with much shiacking being the order of the day. Many were to cook their tea on the wood barbecue and after our meal we came together under our yellow canopy "Bee Haven" for a good chat and then off to bed.

Friday, the official start of the Rally, dawned overcast and it wasn't long before the rain started to tumble down, the fire was lit and again we gathered under our yellow canopy and then to everyone's delight the sun poked through the clouds and the rest of the day was very sunny. Many were to go down to the Lagoon with their fishing gear and before long Bernard was the first to have the fish biting on his line.

Happy hour by the fire
Playing Celebrity Heads

Though late afternoon saw the clouds and rain dissipate it was still a little chilly; the bonus was the sun shining, a few more members were to arrive and join us by the fire. Happy hour arrived and President Graeme welcomed our visitors, to whom he presented a certificate to commemorate their visit, plus members and then our hosts Jim and Liz outlined the weekend programme. The fires were stoked up and a few were to cook their meal on the barbecue plate others elected to eat in their Motorhome.
We all gathered again after our meal and we commenced Celebrity Heads, each of us were to have a turn with plenty of lollies being handed out. There was much laughter as contestants attempted to guess who they were, some having most unusual names. With many hints from the audience most were to guess who they represented, each of us had a turn and it lasted for some hours and certainly bought on many  jocular comments and laughter.
Though, we were rugged up and with the laughter and questions fielded we were enjoying the evenings entertainment we all left the fire reluctantly to head off to bed after 10pm.

Walking the beaches near our Grant's Lagoon Campsite
Saturday dawned a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine, Jim was to take a few out fishing in his boat whilst others explored the Bay of Fires as far up as the Gardens and a few were to walk the white sandy beaches adjacent to Grant's Lagoon.
The fishing competition was full on, though the Bream were proving to be elusive, this did not deter our avid fishermen who were using all sorts of baits and rigs. They were a little frustrated to see Bream jumping out of the water near  their lines and refusing to be caught. Bernie was the only one who was getting the fish to bite on his line again today.
As the sun moved during the day the fishermen transferred to the opposite side of the lagoon to maintain their warmth and seek shelter from the southerly wind.

Proud owners parading their Pets
A few of us were to play the ever popular disc bowls and the usual laughter was to ring out over the camp. Then it was time for lunch with many using the the barbecue and then we sat around enjoying the sunshine and each others company.
More proud owners parading their Pets
Judges Patrick & Julie
It was time for the proud owners of pets to parade them for the various events. Beau paraded by Irene won the best groomed, best dressed and best trick sections with Bella paraded by Kaye second, Spinner paraded by Anne third with Scamp paraded by Lorraine fourth.
The judges Patrick and Julie indicated that based on a points basis the pets in each section were very close. They then presented each pet with a prize and then a final parade of all the pets took place to much clapping and cheering of members. It was noticeable that the owners were very proud of their pets. In the best tricks section it was noticed that all animals were enticed to do their tricks with little treats, which bought on much laughter.
Karen selecting Raffle prize
Patrick, Mick and Jim preparing and cooking battered Flathead

The rest of the afternoon was spent playing disc bowls or just relaxing in the brilliant sunshine. Happy hour arrived and the completion of the fishing competition. As there were no bream caught all participants names went into a hat and the lucky winner was drawn. Our visitor Alf was the lucky winner and was presented with a mug and saucer set, then onto the raffle with so many donated prizes it ensured that all ticket buyers won a prize in fact a few were to win several.
Patrick, Mick and Jim then prepared and cooked beer battered Flathead for all Rally attendees evening meal with each of us receiving three large portions and then all were enticed to come back for seconds and thirds. There were plenty of takers for second and third portions and all commented on the freshness and tastiness of the fish.
We were then to sit around the two huge fires that were lit enjoying each others company and then it was time for Grocery Bingo. It was eyes down and the nights entertainment was underway. It was obvious that each player was taking the games very seriously for you could have thought there was only the caller present until someone cried out bingo! there was complete silence during the call. We had a few of our members travelling interstate call on their  mobiles and we all shouted out "Hello" to each of them as it will be another couple of months before they return, it was good to hear from them and their travels to date.
We were to play until after 10pm and then many had a cup of tea or coffee by the fire before heading off to bed, happy indeed.
Sunday dawned chilly with overcast sky's and again many opted to tour the area and a few again went out in Jim's boat, with the exception of crayfish there were no flathead caught.
It started to rain and we were to farewell many who had to head off today for work commitments or for other reasons. Those leaving were to thank Jim & Liz for the weekend and especially for the entertainment and fish for the evening meals.
By lunch time it really started to rain heavy and it was to stay that way over night, we had the fire located close to our yellow canopy "Bee Haven" and so we gathered under cover playing crib or just chewing the fat, so to speak.
I have to say the locals were glad that the Island Wanderers were keeping up the tradition of bringing rain on wherever they go, for they needed their rain tanks replenished badly. This was the most rain to fall in the last nine months in this area.
As we had still six Motorhomes staying on for another night we were able to once again gather enough flathead and beer batter to cook up another good evening meal for each of us.
We were enjoying each others company so much we did not drift off to our vans to watch television until 8:30pm even with the amount of rain falling.
Monday dawned a little windy though sunny which gave us the opportunity to dismantle our beloved "Bee Haven and pack away all the equipment into our trailer whilst it was dry. We sat around the fire under shelter of trees to avoid the cold southerly wind that had developed, we cooked our meal on the fire and then returned to our Motorhomes for the night to watch television etc.
Tuesday saw a nice sunny day dawn with not a cloud in the sky and the last of the Island Wanderers departed the rally site early morning heading for home, another good rally and we will all gather again at our next Rally at Triabunna in August.
